Simmons, Durden honored as Maxcy Molnar recipients at 2012 Athletic Banquet

POTSDAM, N.Y.—SUNY Potsdam senior student-athletes Maribeth Simmons and Rashaun Durden each received Maxcy Molnar Awards for the 2011-12 season at the annual year-end Athletic Banquet this evening. All seniors from each of the Bears' 16 varsity programs as well as individual team award winners were honored during the dinner.

The Maxcy Molnar award is presented to one male and one female student-athlete who best combine the qualities of sportsmanship, leadership, scholarship and athletic achievement. Only senior student-athletes who competed in at least one sport for four years or their entire undergraduate career are eligible to receive the award.

Simmons was a four-year member of the women's soccer and women's lacrosse programs. With the soccer team, she anchored the defense, starting 67 of the 70 games in which she played. Simmons excelled on offense with the lacrosse team. In 63 games at attack, she amassed 86 goals and 24 assists for 110 points, placing her fourth on the program's all-time scoring list. Simmons, a mathematics and secondary education major, has earned multiple academic honors, including SUNYAC All-Academic and Commissioner's List recognition.

A four-year standout for the men's lacrosse team's defensive corps, Durden was highly decorated over his 52-game career. A three-time All-SUNYAC selection, he was the 2011 SUNYAC Player of the Year, helping the Bears to the conference championship game. Last season, Durden was also named an honorable mention All-American. He entered 2012 as a second team preseason All-American. Durden closed his Potsdam career with 47 ground balls and 30 caused turnovers. He will graduate this May with a degree in communications. Durden is a two-time member of the SUNYAC All-Academic team.

Women's ice hockey coach Jay Green was named the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Coach of the Year. Green led the Bears to the playoffs for the second time in program history and their first-ever postseason victory.
