Women’s lacrosse participates in Polar Plunge

MASSENA, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team participated in the St. Lawrence Seaway Polar Plunge on Saturday, Nov. 5. The annual plunge serves as a fundraiser for the Special Olympics.

The laxers raised over $600 for the plunge, which took place at the Hawkins Point Visitor Center in Massena. The entire lacrosse team was joined by the Bears women's basketball team and athletic director Jim Zalacca, who also took part in the event.

"The student-athletes enjoy taking part in the plunge, not only because it's fun, but their work directly benefits community members and local special Olympic Athletes,” said Potsdam women's lacrosse head coach Lauren Bruce. “I am impressed with their hard work and appreciate the time they put into the event. Our team is stronger for it. I would also like to thank the fans and family who supported us in this endeavor.”

The Bears' efforts are part of a larger Division III initiative. Last January, NCAA Division III announced a partnership with the Special Olympics. The partnership's purpose is “to improve the lives of Special Olympics athletes through their involvement with Division III student-athletes and to foster a mutual learning experience between Division III student-athletes and Special Olympics athletes.”
