Bears victorious in exhibition

POTSDAM, N.Y.- The SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team hosted Ontario Hockey Academy in an exhibition game. Annmarie Lewis scored the game's lone goal as the Bears came out victorious.

Despite being outshot 10-3, Potsdam managed to keep the game even in the first period. The best scoring opportunity for the Mavericks came midway through the first period. The Bears turned the puck over in front of their own but goalie Jen Conophy  would make a big save. The Bears also killed off an O.H.A. power play in the period.

The second period got off to an inauspicious start as the Mavericks were awarded a penalty shot only 24 seconds in. Forward Jena Nicholls attempted but was denied by Conophy, one of her 15 saves. The Bears would seize the momentum and capitalize with 2:23 left in the period. A checking penalty resulted in Brittany Lucky setting up Lewis for the score.

Potsdam would hold the Mavericks scoreless in the third period to preserve the shutout. Goalie Brittany Lucky would record four saves in the period and nine total as she took over midway through the second period. Potsdam held a 10-4 advantage in shots, the only period in which they outshot their opponent. The victory left Coach Jay Green pleased.

“Overall, I was very impressed,” said the fifth-year coach. “We got stronger as the game went on which is a great sign given that we have only had two practices.”

The Bears host the Penn State Nittany Lions on Friday and Saturday. The contests will be a 7 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
